Generate Novel YouTube Thumbnail Ideas with Grok and Figma

Use Grok Bot to move beyond simple template-filling and generate new, creative headline and thumbnail concepts for content like YouTube videos. In Claire’s test, Grok produced the strongest new ideas in Figma.

I would say Grok actually wins this one in that it gave me really good new ideas for these thumbnails and headlines, ones that we hadn't done that I also think look really nice actually... I have consistently tested Grok, Dot, and Claude Duet on Figma, and Grok is definitely the best at Figma.

Before you start

What you need

  • Grok Bot with a Figma MCP connection
  • Access to existing Figma thumbnail templates for context
  • Topic or title for the new thumbnail

What you’ll make

Several new thumbnail design concepts and corresponding headline ideas within Figma that are creatively distinct from existing templates.

Tools used

The workflow

Follow the sequence once, then adapt the prompts, checks, and handoffs to your own setup.

4 steps

Step 01

Set Up Figma Access

Ensure Grok Bot is connected to your Figma account via its MCP (Model Context Protocol) and has access to your existing design files and templates.

The source emphasizes that Grok is '100% the best at using Figma,' so this connection is the most critical part of the setup.

Step 02

Provide a Creative Brief

Prompt Grok Bot with the details of your content (e.g., episode title, guest) and explicitly ask for new, creative ideas that go beyond your standard formats.

Example prompt
Generate new thumbnail and headline ideas for our How I AI episode with [Guest Name]. I want concepts with a 'YouTube vibe' that are different from our usual templates.

Mentioning a desired aesthetic like 'YouTube vibe' can help guide the creative direction, as noted in the source.

Step 03

Evaluate the Generated Concepts

If Grok produces designs and headlines in Figma, Review these options, looking for the ones that are visually appealing and creatively distinct from your past work.

The goal is to find 'really good new ideas,' as the source describes. Don't settle for minor variations of your existing templates.

Step 04

Select and Refine

Choose the best concept from the options provided. You can then either use it as-is, manually refine it in Figma, or ask Grok for further iterations on the selected design.

Even if the result isn't perfect, a strong new concept from the agent can save significant creative brainstorming time.

What good looks like

  • The agent produces multiple, distinct design ideas.
  • The designs are novel and not just re-skins of existing templates.
  • The output includes both visual thumbnail concepts and text-based headline ideas.

Runbook notes

How to recover when the loop fails and where human judgment helps.

If it goes sideways

The agent only populates existing templates instead of creating new ideas.
Refine the prompt to explicitly ask for 'new ideas' or 'creative concepts' that are different from the existing templates. Example: 'Generate 3 new thumbnail concepts for our next episode; don't just use the old templates.'
The generated design is visually unappealing or nonsensical.
This is a creative task, so subjective rejection is expected. Discard the unappealing ideas and run the prompt again, perhaps with more specific guidance on the desired mood or style.

Human checkpoints

Let routine work keep moving.

  1. Review the generated thumbnail and headline ideas to select the most promising candidate for further refinement or use.
